
Indian Institute of Technology Delhi has emerged as India’s top-ranked engineering institution in the latest QS World University Rankings 2026, surpassing several prestigious institutes including Indian Institute of Technology Bombay.
With Class 12 board results declared by CBSE, UP Board, and other education boards, students across the country are now focusing on college admissions, especially for engineering courses at premier institutes. Among all Indian institutions, IIT Delhi has secured the highest position in the QS rankings for 2026.
According to the latest rankings, IIT Delhi improved its global position from 150 to 123. The institute has shown remarkable progress over the last two years, climbing more than 70 places from its 2024 ranking of 197.
Meanwhile, IIT Bombay, which was previously ranked among the top Indian institutes, has slipped behind IIT Delhi in the latest rankings. Indian Institute of Technology Madras has also improved its performance and now ranks third among Indian institutions with a global position of 180.
Admission to IIT Delhi remains highly competitive. Students seeking admission to B.Tech programs must qualify through the JEE Main and JEE Advanced examinations. Every year, lakhs of aspirants compete for limited seats in the institute due to its academic reputation, research output, and placement opportunities.
The latest QS rankings highlight the growing global recognition of Indian engineering institutions, with IIT Delhi leading the way among all Indian colleges in 2026.
